Me and Mr Ian Ward

Well what can I say about Ian - I've only got good memories and stories of him so I'll share a few with you. We lived on Ashleigh Court - I lived there from day one and Ian moved on shortly afterwards I think. At first we didn't really have much to do with each other and after we got talking he thought I was some sort of spy because I used to work for Customs & Excise LOL!!!! In truth, I worked in the VAT side and left years ago but he used to joke that I was on their payroll! So me and Ian - we just got talking one day and sort of hit it off - Ian never came to wanting anything and I never went to Ian wanting anything from him - we just had mutual respect and we were good friends. A story....well me and Ian both loved a bet on the horses infact we were silly sods and we'd bet on anything.....proving the old addage of "betting on two flies crawling up a wall" to be right - we did just that and I won! So people called him Shag-nasty or Nasty1 - I just called him Mr Ian Ward and he called me Mr Mick Cooper - infact the last time I saw Ian (and he didn't look well) he smiled and said "Mr Mick Cooper".....I'll always remember that. He'd nip round to my flat for a bit of dinner or a catch up, even when he moved off there he'd be back to see me if he was in the area. I remember one night there was a bit of trouble on Ashleigh Court (or as we called it The Bronx) and me, Ian and a few others got tooled up with whatever we could find (I'd got a cricket bat!) - anyway we patrolled the street like those Guardian Angels in America - like a cross between Dads Army and Neighbourhood Watch. We spent more time pissing about and having a cup of coffee than actually finding out who was causing trouble. We'd sit out in the summer, Ian would get some steak from somewhere and I'd get the bread, a few others would come too - we'd have like an informal barbeque.......a few tunes and we'd just chill out. I'll always remember Ian's love of swans.......and the fact that he loved life and it's an absolute shit that life was taken away from him so early on. Mr Ian Ward - proud to call you my friend.......thanks for being my friend and thanks for a lot of good memories. Sleep well and trust me.......Ashleigh Court was crap the day you left. Your friend....your neighbour.....and almost your accountant. lol Mick Cooper x
